Also called nearsightedness, Myopia is not only growing at epidemic proportions, it is also one of the top five causes of blindness. Children who do not control the progression of myopia are at extremely high risk of developing eye diseases such as Glaucoma, Retinal Detachment, and AMD as they age.
Vision loss from macular degeneration, glaucoma, retinitis pigmentosa, stargardt and other conditions causes massive changes and places a large emotional burden on the patient and family. Dr. Larsen, a Member of IALVS (International Academy of Low Vision Specialists), understands the need to help you maintain as much independence as possible by maximizing the remaining sight that you have.
Dr. Larsen will identify with the patient and often their family the things they most wish to be able to do, and Dr. Larsen will show what optical or digital technology can help you. Examples are driving with bioptic telescopes or reading and playing cards again with telescope glasses.
Dr. Larsen has helped patients from the greater Salt Lake City, Provo, West Valley City, West Jordan, Orem, and Sandy among others.

The International Academy of Low Vision Specialists (IALVS) defines low vision as "the inability to see well enough to do those tasks you want to continue doing, even with your glasses (contacts or refractive surgery). Our Low Vision Optometrist, Dr. Shaun Larsen, is a member of the IALVS, and has helped patients from the Salt Lake City area regain their independence after vision loss from macular degeneration, glaucoma, diabetic eye disease, retinitis pigmentosa, stroke-related vision loss, nystagmus, albinism, cataracts, and many other diseases that cause vision loss.
For hard to fit patients that prefer to wear contact lenses, however, there are options available that can provide comfortable and effective contact lens wear. This will require a specialized fitting with an eye doctor that is an authority on custom contacts and knows your condition and the various products available to find the right match for your specific condition. Our optometrist has extensive experience with custom Scleral lenses for Keratoconus, post LASIK complications, and corneal irregularities.
If your child’s prescription for nearsightedness is getting worse all the time, it’s more than an inconvenience. Myopia can be aggressive. As incidence rates of myopia drastically rise, it’s also the case that aggressive or progressive myopia is rapidly increasing too. This situation is much worse than needing stronger and stronger corrective lenses, glasses or contacts. Myopia puts your child at risk for a wide range of serious and potentially devastating eye conditions later in life.
Our optometrist helps patients from the Salt Lake City area get relief from dry and uncomfortable eyes. Dry Eye affects millions of Americans, causing dryness, a feeling of sand or dirt in the eye, eye fatigue, and watery eyes. Our optometrist, Dr. Larsen has extensive experience and the latest technology to diagnose the cause of your dry eye symptoms and the most effective treatment plan to relieve the discomfort.
A comprehensive eye exam includes a number of tests and procedures to examine and evaluate the health of your eyes and the quality of your vision. These tests range from simple ones, like having you read an eye chart, to complex tests, such as using a high-powered lens to examine the health of the tissues inside of your eyes.
